Vanessa Saliba from Ghajnsielem, recently completed a master's degree in educational studies from the University of Sheffield (UK).

Vanessa, who is married to local author Charles Daniel Saliba, graduated during a ceremony held at the University of Sheffield in mid-January 2016. She researched in the field of learning disabilities and inclusion. Vanessa is a peripatetic support teacher with the autism spectrum support team.

She focused her dissertation on private tuition, and she investigated the reasons why students in their final year of compulsory schooling receive private tuition in preparation for their Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) examination in Malta despite having fee-free education at school.

These reasons were analysed from the perspectives of students, their parents and their private tutor. For her high standard of work, Saliba was awarded the St. Catherine's High School Postgraduate Student Prize.

Vanessa was partially funded by a MASTER it! scholarship. The scholarship is part-financed by the European Union – European Social Fund (ESF) under the Operational Programme II – Cohesion Policy 2007-2013, 'Empowering People for More Jobs and a Better Quality of Life.'
