Update: Reaction below by PN spokesperson for Gozo Dr Chris Said. This week, the Minister for Education and Employment Evarist Bartolo, said that, the current Victoria (Gozo) Primary, which is situated in Vajringa Street, “is not fit for the demands of 21st century education.”
“The educators and staff at the school are doing a remarkable job in a very difficult environment,” the Minister said. He added that,”the building is too old and students are crammed.”
“The school hall has had to be changed into classrooms. Parents who request to send their children here are being told that they cannot accept further applications, due to lack of space,” said the Minister.
Minister Bartolo said that initial planning is underway for the construction of a new Primary School in Victoria that will include a childcare, kindergarten and primary education facilities.
“Furthermore, a four-storey parking facility will also be built to provide parking facilities for the staff and alleviate parking issues present in the community. This project will also allow the school to increase its capacity,” the Minister said.
Update: According to the Opposition spokesperson for Gozo Dr Chris Said, in a post on his Facebook page, he has said that “instead of extending or building a new wing to the Girls’ Secondary School, for which permits and tender have already been issued, the new Primary School in Victoria is to be built on the football ground next to the main parking area in Victoria.”
This ground, is used by the three clubs in Victoria – Victoria Hotspurs, Oratory Youths and SK Victoria Wanderers, for their nurseries, they also collect revenue for parking in the ground.
Dr Said added, that he had been informed that the clubs had not been consulted in any way over the decision and were considering a course of action.
“Undoubtedly there is a need for a new Primary School in Victoria,” he said, “but the way they are doing things just show disturbance, a lack of seriousness and great lack of planning.”
