Italian journalist Frederico Formignani, who is based in Milano, published an article at the end of January – Malta: il Mago Della Globigerina – about Gozitan sculptor Joe Xuereb on the web travel magazine 'Lattitudes.'
This travel website quotes a total of 30,000 members, while it is estimated that about a hundred thousand pages are read on a daily basis.
This review on the Gozitan sculptor appeared following the recent news that Joe Xuereb, together with photographer Daniel Cilia, had participated in a Frankfurt exhibition with their sculptures and photography, titled 'The Spirit of an Island'
The exhibition was held as part of the 'Cultural Days – Malta 2015' cultural events, organised by the European Central Bank in collaboration with the Malta Central Bank, between the 18th of November and the 13th of December 2015.
In his write-up, Formignani recalls the time when he last visited the Gozitan sculptor's studio in Ghajnsielem where he describes seeing "Xuereb's rounded forms and touch the white powdery dust of the Malta limestone."
He elaborates about the sculptor's influence from Malta Prehistoric Temple Culture where the fertility goddess symbol much prevailed.
He also gave a list of the main attractions that a traveller can find on the island of Gozo giving prominence to the Ggantija Temples, being considered as the oldest free standing monument in the world.
Frederico Formignani also mentions the occasion when he was part of a group of journalists that spoke to Maltese and Gozitan artists, which Xuereb said included not only himself, but also Luciano Micallef and Daniel Cilia, following an exhibition of their artistic works in Milano, at the 'Palazzo Affari e Giuraconsulti,' as part of the celebrations of Malta joining the European Union in 2004.
Joe Xuereb said that apart from the review of his work, the island of Gozo "will both receive and gain more promotion" through the journalist's article on the travel magazine website. The article is available online here.
