The stock of licensed motor vehicles rose by 2,235 in the third quarter of 2008, to stand at 294,155.

As at end September 2008, the stock of licensed motor vehicles stood at 294,155. Of these, 75.8 per cent were private vehicles while commercial vehicles accounted for 16.3 per cent.

New licences

New licences issued during the third quarter of 2008 amounted to 3,501. Private vehicles accounted for 2,438 new licences, or 69.6 per cent of the total. In the reference quarter, the majority of new licences were issued to private vehicles falling within ‘Class 1’ (<1300 cc). This class accounted for 1,446 new licences, while vehicles in ‘Class 2’ (1301-1449 cc) accounted for 339. Newly-licensed ‘new’ motor vehicles amounted to 1,851, or 52.9 per cent of the total, while newly-licensed ‘used’ motor vehicles amounted to 1,650.

Exported, scrapped and garaged

In the third quarter of 2008, 32 vehicles were exported. Scrapped vehicles numbered 697, of which 88.1 per cent were ‘Class 1’ private cars (<1300 cc). In the period under review, 1,299 vehicles were garaged. This means that as at end September, garaged vehicles accounted for nearly 66 per cent of total vehicles that are no longer on the road.
