The Parliamentary Secretary for Rights of Persons with Disability and Active Ageing Justyne Caruana, today inaugurated ‘Dar il-Fjuri’ the second home for persons with disability in Gozo.

Dr Caruana said that this is the second of 10 homes for persons with disability, which the Government has committed itself to in this legislature as part of the ‘Progett Socjeta Gusta.’Dar il-Fjuri, which is located in Victoria, will be able to accommodate up to 10 people with special needs and will be operated by Agenzija Sapport.

The Parliamentary Secretary said that one of the Government’s electoral promises was for peace of mind for the families of disabled people, and this house will provide a service as stipulated in the standards for residential service for people with disabilities.

Dr Caruana said that the home was selected following an expression of interest. She explained that extensive works were carried out to make it fully accessible.

The Parliamentary Secretary mentioned other projects for the disabled in Gozo, including as the ‘Learning Hub’ in Ghajnsielem, which has now started sign language training in Maltese for the deaf, the Special Olympics Gozo, the new KNPD office and the front desk for Agenzija Sapport.

A ‘Sheltered Employment’ project is also being undertaken in collaboration with the Employment and Training Corporation (ETC), whereby 80 people with various disabilities will be assisted to find employment.

Dr Caruana concluded by saying that the Government is currently working on five other houses, including one in Zabbar and another in Pembroke.
