country’s worst health problemThe Minister for Gozo, Anton Refalo, has inaugurated the first phase of a project within the Gozo Sports Complex in Victoria, at an investment of around € 80,000, with a new parquet flooring system at the Main Hall of the complex.
The Minister reiterated that the Ministry for Gozo has always believed that sport must be a driving force behind Gozitan youth, children and athletes to combat obesity, which has became the country’s worst health problem, he said.
“The Sports Complex is the headquarters of Gozo Sports and is being used by great Gozitan sportsmen, as well as children through Sokla Sport.”
The Minister expressed his satisfaction with this project. “This is only the first phase of the project, to follow in due course will be changes to the spectator area and seating. The Sports Complex will continue to grow with the construction of the pool, which will finally bring this chapter to a close.”
It was also announced that for the second consecutive year the Gozo Sports Board together with the Ministry for Gozo and Malta Sport, will organise the Gozo Sports Awards, when the best in Sports will be recognised for what they have achieved and committed to in 2015.
The Minister explained that the Sports Awards this year are being organised at a higher level than the usual honours, with another prize for the athlete on specific technical merits. The Awards evening will be held on the 30th of April at Villa Fiorita and will be filmed and transmitted on the Gozo Sports programme on TVM 2.
The Gozo Sports Festival will be organised across the island in April. Last year the Festival was held over one weekend, and this time it will be spread over four weeks, the Minister said.
The Gozo Sports Board has worked with various Gozitan and Maltese Sports entities and athletes to interact during a whole month of sports. This sports festival will open its doors with a seminar organised by Sport Malta.
This festival will run between the 16th of April and the 8th of May. Further information will be announced in the coming days.
The Minister said that the festival will not only help Sports tourism, “but also shows the Government’s commitment to the sports sector in Gozo.”
