Michelle Muscat, who is the Honorary President of the Special Olympics Malta, yesterday welcomed home 16 Special Olympics athletes from their games in Cyprus, after winning 33 medals, including 20 gold medals, in the Cyprus National Games.

The team was given a rapturous welcome by family, friends and supporters on their arrival at Malta International Airport on Monday afternoon.

Last Wednesday, Special Olympics Malta made history during the Special Olympics National Games in Cyprus, when the first ever Gozitan athlete – Maria Pia – won 3 medals in swimming – 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze.

The team was led by Anna Calleja Director of Special Olympics Malta. The athletes competed in the disciplines of swimming, athletics and cycling.
