Exhibition on ‘The Coastal Defences of Gozo’ inaugurated

As part of the activities organised for Archives Awareness Week, an exhibition of historical documents as well as photos of the coastal defences of Gozo, which are kept at the National Archives in Gozo, is being held within the same buildings in Gozo.

The exhibition was inaugurated by Mr Anthony Borg, Head of Secretariat at the Ministry for Gozo, who also delivered the Minister’s message. In her message, the Minister stated that such an activity serves to increase awareness about documents of today which will be part of the basis of our history whilst those who have documents of historical interest will be encouraged to preserve them for future generations. On behalf of the Minister for Gozo, Mr Borg presented a set of architectural plans of historical sites, drafted by employees at the Department for Projects and Development within the Ministry for Gozo.

Mr Charles Farrugia, National Archivist, also addressed those present for the inauguration. He gave a brief overview of the functions of the National Archives in Malta and Gozo and presented two original documents related with the work of the Gozo Civic Council.

Rev. Mgr Joseph Bezzina dwelt on the significance of the exhibition and the historical importance carried by the exhibited documents of the coastal fortifications of Gozo.

A catalogue, sponsored by HSBC Bank (Malta) plc, giving detailed information about the exhibited photographs and documents, was especially published for the occasion.

A souvenir postcard (No 2), which available at the National Archives, Gozo Section, has been issued for the occasion and is pictured above.
