The management transition at the Gozo General Hospital, St Luke's Hospital and the Karin Grech Rehabilitation Hospital from the government to Vitals Global Healthcare is now officially underway.

Vitals Group Healthcare Director Ram Tumuluri together with the Minister for Health Chris Fearne gave assurances that the services provided for Maltese citizens will remain free of charge and that all existing employees will retain their government contract with their existing conditions for a period of 30 years. It is also anticipated that around 600 new jobs will eventually be created.

Construction work on the Gozo General Hospital is expected to commence in the coming weeks and the new Barts Medical School is expected to be completed by July 2017, it is anticipated that the first students will start their courses by September of 2017.

Indian contractors who are based in Dubai will be handling the construction work and the company said that they will be doing all that they can to minimize the impact on traffic.

A total of 450 beds comprising 250 acute beds together with 200 beds for geriatric and long-term cases will be provided., 350 of the beds will be for Maltese patients and the remaining 100 beds will be reserved for private patients.

The construction works are expected to take approximately 24 months to complete and the new hospitals are expected to be officially inaugurated in July of 2018.
