Since 1998, Teatru Unplugged has been entertaining patrons with its diverse range of musical genres from upcoming local musicians. Held annually at the Manoel, the contrast of fast moving musical acts creates a unique event against the backdrop of the classical theatre. This years’ line-up includes Sasha & Sam, Scar, Simon & Phil from Sixth Simfoni, Peter & Papps, Ray (THE CHARACTERS, THE RIFFFS ) with special guest star Ira Losco.
But don’t think you’ve seen it all before! The Teatru performers show off their craftsmanship with all the props, loud sound and lights ‘unplugged.’ What’s left is simply the artist, their instrument and the audience.
They will be presenting a set comprising of extracts from musical masterpieces that classically oriented people have definitely heard a number of times , but interpreted in the artists own original contemporary style – even young members of the audience attending the theatre for the first time, will immediately be able to relate to.
About the artists:
Simon & Phil: Simon Vella (violin) and Philip Zammit (cello) are classically trained musicians who are active in contemporary music projects varying in styles from electronic to jazz rock and hip-hop.
Sasha & Sam: Sasha and Sam have become synonymous on both the local and foreign music scene with soulful, heartfelt, ‘hit the right spot’ lyrics and melodies. They met 4 years ago and it was instant harmony with Sasha on guitar and vocals and Sam on the piano. Since then they have played at various gigs in Malta, Brussels and Amsterdam.
Scar Scar: Return to a familiar setting fusing their rock DNA with a raw, unplugged set to give you a breathless, stripped down version of their latest and upcoming hit songs. Well established in the local scene and breaking ground abroad, SCAR are Konrad Pule, David Cassar Torregiani, Michael Scicluna and Kurt Vella.
Ray Mercia: Singer / songwriter Ray Mercieca takes the stage of Teatru for the first time ever. Front singer of the former band ‘ The Characters’ , is currently working on a new album. Only this time it’s alongside his fellow band members from the top ‘cult’ band ‘ The Rifffs ‘ , who will be launching their much awaited album in February.
Ira Losco: Following the successful release of her latest album’ Fortune Teller’ which has 5 single releases to date, Ira Losco takes the stage at Teatru once again. Going back through her time-line and numerous prestigious billing in festivals abroad, Ira has managed to keep up a non predictable approach in her music starting from pop -rock , Indie- rock, and will not stop to impress and her special appearance at this year’s edition.
Peter & Papps: Peter & (Alex) Papps are fast becoming one of Malta’s favourite acoustic duo rocking through cover versions from U2, Snow Patrol and Bob Dylan. Great surprises await you in their first Teatru Unplugged session fulfilling a dream they have been looking forward to for quite some time.
