A delegation from Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party met the Breast Care Support Group, with President Mrs Gertrude Abela and Vice President Doris Fenech, as part of the campaign for breast care awareness.

Arnold Cassola, Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party Chairperson said, “Breast cancer is a reality which is taking the lives of numerous people of any age and more awareness will help to save lives. This is achieved by organising more awareness campaigns and by speeding up the process of setting up public breast screening services. The state should also consider introducing a mobile unit screening service which will be accessible to people at their work place.”

Yvonne Ebejer Arqueros, Alternattiva Demokratika candidate for the European Parliament elections, remarked that womens’ health should be high on the country’s agenda, adding that the Green Party’s policies emphasising quality of life, control and abatement of pollution, strong food quality standards and a social Europe benefit the whole population, including women.

Mrs Gertrude Abela added that 10 % of women are most likely to develop lumps at one stage or another. Also, the rate of new cases of women with breast cancer is increasing rapidly with approximately 10 cases every week.

AD Spokesperson for Health and Social Protection Mary Anne Zammit said, “Breast awareness is crucial in womens’ health and more public awareness on prevention will surely combat the direct threat of Breast Cancer. Breast care awareness should be extended to all women from every walk of life, mainly addressing those women with low education, and those living in disadvantaged conditions.”
