A group of civil society activists have issued a statement saying that they endorse the petition calling for the introduction of assisted death in Malta.

“We appeal to all Members of Parliament to give the issue the attention it deserves and to carry out a mature parliamentary debate informed by public consultation, evidence and research, and characterised by constructive dialogue. Rights, responsibilities, ethics and dignity should be key themes in this process”

The statement was signed by – Michael Briguglio, Karl Camilleri, Monique Agius, Martin Abela, Angele Deguara, Mina Tolu, Salvu Mallia, Mary Grace Vella, Michael Grech and James Debono.

More that 1,100 people have so far signed an online petition Maltese Parliamentarians to introduce a law on assisted death in Malta.

The petition was set up by Marlene Magro, on behalf of her husband Joe, an ALS sufferer.

She has said in the petition that, “both myself and our children, as well as other family members of ours, understand Joe, because no-one would like to end in a similar situation. Joe always insists with us that should this law not be introduced, before he ends up in such a terrible state he will have no choice but to commit suicide.”

“This scares me a lot as I know that if that was to take place I will have a hard time to live with the knowledge that Joe could live longer with everyone around him, and that his death took place in dignity and within his family setting.”

Marlene went on to say that “with the introduction of a law on assisted death, Joe will be able to live peacefully for a while longer.”
