Citadel Management Committee announced by Minister for Gozo

The Ministry for Gozo has appointed a management team for the newly restored Gozo Citadel in order that the site can be managed, preserved and better protected.

This follows on from the inauguration of the refurbishment project and the implementation of the recommendations of the Cittadella masterplan.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Gozo Dr Anton Refalo, who said that following the guidelines of the Cittadella masterplan, the new Citadel Management Committee is intended to first and foremost maintain a constant and vigilant programme of maintenance and restoration, in areas such as those visited by large numbers of tourists, as well as more significant areas that need renovation from time to time.

At the same time, the management committee is also tasked to promote the Citadel, by all possible means as a site for tourists, as well as a site for cultural and artistic activities and as an internationally recognised site with its value as a legacy of world heritage. Citadel Management Committee announced by Minister for Gozo The management committee comprises representatives from the Ministry for Gozo, from the Cultural Centre and from the Citadel Visitors Centre, the Victoria Local Council, the Malta Tourism Authority, the Gozo Tourism Association, the Police, the Administration of the Cathedral, Wirt Ghawdex, the Gozo Business Chamber and the security officers employed on site. The committee will be under the chairmanship of Mgr Dr Joe Vella Gauci, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate for Malta to UNESCO.

The technical council within the management committee, will be responsible for the organisation of maintenance and cleaning work, along with the restoration unit, as well as manage a group of experts composed of officials from the Superintendence for Cultural Heritage, Heritage Malta, the Planning Authority, Directorate of Restoration and others.

The Citadel management committee will also be instructed, as indicated in the masterplan, to hold meetings for interested stakeholders such as commercial entities, religious, cultural, civil, to voice their opinions for broader participation.
