MHRA meets fish farm representatives to discuss cleaner seasThe Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association (MHRA) called for a meeting with the Federation of Maltese Aquaculture Producers (FMAP) during which the issue of slime along portions of the coast was discussed.

MHRA President Mr Tony Zahra stated that the association felt it to be more appropriate to discuss such an important matter directly with the key players involved in this issue with a view to focus on actions that will ultimately be beneficial for all.

Mr Zahra stressed that the Aquaculture industry is an important economic sector in Malta however any activity emanating from such operations must not leave a negative impact on the tourism sector and more significantly the surrounding environment.

FMAP shared the preoccupations expressed by MHRA and stressed that they are currently monitoring the situation closely and are upgrading their efforts to identify both the causes of and the solutions to the incidence of slime.

FMAP further stated that it is essential that all their members abide by current legal obligations. The MHRA said that "more importantly the FMAP has understood the need to work closer with all stakeholders and public authorities to ensure cleaner seas through self regulation and participation in corporate social responsibility projects at a Mediterranean level."
