"We're committed to strengthening police working conditions. Improvements have already been made and others are being implemented."

This was stated by Minister for Home Affairs and National Security, Carmelo Abela, during a ceremony in which 64 members and ex members received medals for their long and efficient service.

During his intervention the Minister said investment was taking place to build a modern force offering good working conditions. This comprised diverse opportunities in career advancement, a continuous increase in human resources, good quality training and the purchase of new equipment.

He referred to new rights that have been given to police, including the right of representation, a reduction in tax on extra duties and improvements in shift hours.

The Minister said the next step was a plan to enhance the working environment, especially in police stations. Discussions were ongoing with different parties on the evaluation of an insurance policy for Disciplined Forces and overtime arrears.

Minister Abela added that the Government would ensure police were equipped to address criminal trends, both present and future ones, while enjoying improved working conditions. He added they were expected to deliver professional service to the community.

He concluded by saying that together with Commissioner for Police, Lawrence Cutajar, he recognised the value of the medal, which a symbol of gratitude for duties is carried out with dedication during their career.

Commissioner Cutajar stated that he felt honoured that today, on San Mikiel Day; the police patron was assisting in the provision of these medals. He said that every day, society relied on the experience and professionalism of officers for their protection.

During the ceremony, held at the Police General Headquarters, 46 current members of the force received medals. 5 received the medal given after 18 years of service, 22 members received the first clasp after 25 years of service and 19 members received second clasp after 30 years of service. The other 18 to be rewarded are ex members of the force.
