For the tenth consecutive year, the International Association of Paremiology (AIP-IAP) has organised its Interdisciplinary Colloquium on Proverbs (ICP16) in Tavira, Portugal, the 'City of Proverbs.' Scholars from around the world meet to attend lectures on different themes related to proverbs.

This year, the President of the Association, Professor Rui João Baptista Soares, invited Charles Daniel Saliba, a Gozitan lecturer in Maltese linguistics and literature at Sir M. A. Refalo Sixth Form & Centre for Further Studies, for the second time, as one of the speakers to present his plenary paper entitled 'Maltese Proverbs on Women.'

Dr Saliba examined the representation of women in Maltese proverbs, their roles and how they are perceived in the Maltese society. This research paper focused on the chronological life of a Maltese woman from birth until old age, as seen through a sample of proverbs. It revealed the mentality and customs of the Maltese society at the time.

At the same time it encouraged the listeners to reflect on the progress many modern societies have made regarding antifeminism and thus many of the proverbs indicated, as Professor Wolfgang Mieder (2004) put it, "have dropped out of use because their message or metaphor does not fit the times any longer."
