After the 1st of January anyone caught smoking in a private car when accompanied by children under the age of 16, will be liable to a fine of € 50.
The Minister for Health Chris Fearne presented the Legal Notice in Parliament on Tuesday evening, coming into force on the 1st of January 2017, and will lead to the prohibition of smoking in private cars containing children under 16 years of age.
Malta will be the sixth country in the European Union to bring in these regulations, he said.
Dr Fearne said that various diseases and conditions have a higher incidence in children living in an environment where there are cigarettes and subject to passive smoking. Among these conditions are asthma, ear infections, as well as cases of cot death and childhood cancer.
He explained that this is why this law, which was announced in the budget with a view to protecting children, found full support in Maltese society including that of the Tobacco Industry Advisory Council.
