The Communist Party of Malta said today that it opposes the recommendation put forward by the European Parliament on a vote in favour for the setting up of a European Military Defence Union.

“The proposal also obliges member states to contribute 2% of their GDP towards this aim.” The Party added that this proposal “goes directly against Malta’s Neutrality clause in the constitution.”

The Party stated that “it was dismayed with the position taken by the five of the Maltese MEPs who voted or abstained on an issue that goes directly against the Maltese Constitution. On the other hand we applaud the position taken by Dr Alfred Sant in voting against this proposal.”

The Communist Party of Malta concluded by saying, “the Maltese Government should remain faithful to the Maltese Constitution and oppose European strategy for the creation of an EU security and defence plan.”
