During a press conference held at Castille, Dr Chris Said, Parliamentary Secretary for Public Dialogue and Information together with Ghajnsielem Mayor Francis Cauchi and project manager Franco Ciangrua explained the details of the Ghajnsielem nativity village which is now in the final phases of completion.

‘Bethlehem f’ Ghajnsielem’ which is being built by the Ghajnsielem Local Council in collaboration with all the main village organizations will offer a naturalistic reproduction of the environ of Bethlehem.

Mayor Francis Cauchi said that the village is being built on land stretching 20,000sqm, in the area known as ‘Ta Passi’ fields, situated between Ghajnsielem’s main square and Mgarr Road. Although ‘Ta Passi’ has been abandoned for several years, the area has now been cleaned and over 400 meters of rubble walls, which had collapsed over the years, were rebuilt. Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said said that the project offers a boost for internal tourism and promises to be a major attraction in Gozo where families can relax and enjoy Christmas in a unique way.

Project manager Mr Franco Ciangura said that ‘Bethlehem f’ Ghajnsielem’ will include several attractions including a carpenter workshop, a blacksmith, a bakery, a market selling fruits and vegetables, a tavern, a crafts center and a horse stable. The main attraction will obviously be the grotto with Mary, Joseph, & baby Jesus. Maps will be given to all visitors and ‘Bethlehem by night’ will offer visitors another unique experience in terms of ambience and atmosphere.

“Bethlehem f’ Ghajnsielem” will be officially inaugurated on Saturday, the 6th of December by the Prime Minister, Dr Lawrence Gonzi. It will remain open until Sunday the 4th of January. The entrance to this village is free of charge.

Although the nativity village will remain open throughout the whole period, it will be animated with live actors on the following dates and times: Saturdays: 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th and 3rd from 4.30pm – 9.00pm Sundays and Public Holidays: 7th, 8th, 14th 21st, 25th 28th and 4th from 1.30pm – 6.30pm

‘Ghajnsielem f’ Bethlehem’ is situated a short walk away from the Mgarr Ferry Terminal, see map below. Ferry passengers can leave their car in Cirkewwa and visit the Nativity Village on foot. One can easily follow the signs for directions. Parking is also available in the main square. The animated village will simply offer a unique attraction this Christmas.
