Yesterday, for the first time in the history of our country, San Lawrenz Mayor, Noel Formosa, presided over a civil marriage. The marriage of Marlene Formosa and Yamen Bakri was held at the San Lawrenz Local Council Office.
In the presence of guests of the happy couple, Marlene and Yamen exchanged vows to love each other forever. It was a short and charming ceremony, but one that was worthy of the formulary of the occasion.
Marlene and Yamen have known each other for the last two years and had been preparing themselves for this memorable day. They are also looking forward to having a Christian wedding in the near future.
Civil marriages have been part of the Maltese Legislature since 1975, but until recently these weddings could be officiated only by a Marriage Registrar.
After a public debate this law was amended, giving the Mayor the faculty to preside over a marriage if the couple chose to wed in a Local Council Office.
