Health Minister Chris Fearne has given details of a new and innovative system that he said, “will change the way we look at health care in our homes.”

Remote patient monitoring, is a system by which chronically ill patients, such as those with diabetes or cardiovascular disease, can be monitored daily in the comfort of their homes. This technological system has the ability to check sugar levels, blood pressure or heart rate.

Dr Fearne explained that these results are immediately transferred to the health professionals electronically to monitor any change in the condition, the patient is therefore reached immediately without any deterioration of the condition.

The remote patient monitoring, will be one of the key elements in the Digital Health Strategy that is being launched for consultation next September, said the Health Minister.

“This technology will lead to fewer patients needing acute care in hospitals, while also ensuring that patients can more efficiently control their condition. It is estimated that through this system the readmission rates in hospitals decrease drastically,” said Health Minister Chris Fearne.

He concluded by saying that this technology is valued at € 5 million per year and will reach approximately 45,000 patients.
