Simon Busuttil has announced his resignation as Leader of the PN. In a statement he said that the Party must begin a process to take stock of the result of the election. “The first thing to be done is to start the process to elect a new Party Leader.”
“As head of the party, I take full political responsibility for the outcome and believe that the Nationalist Party should select a new head to implement this new phase,” said Dr Busuttil.
He said that he could leave office “with a clear conscience, during the past four years I have given all that I could, with all my energy and determination. There was absolutely nothing else that I could have done.”
Dr Busuttil said that “on a personal note, it was a great privilege for me to lead this glorious party, and the memory of this wonderful experience over the last four years will remain with me throughout my life.”
He said that informed the Party Administration of his decision in a meeting this morning, Dr Busuttil announced that they have “also chosen to accept responsibility” for the defeat and will therefore be stepping down from Office.
He added, “I am proud that during the election campaign we delivered a strongly believed message: that there is a different way of policy making in our country, to have good governance, independent institutions and the political system in country must be cleaned up before it is too late.”
“Above all, I am proud that our message was based on the values that we believe, namely, honesty and integrity,” said Dr Busuttil.
He continued by saying, “I have a message for the 135,000 voters who voted for the policy that we offered , let’s keep dignity and let’s keep what we firmly believed it. What we started and believed in, remains valid and remains good.”
He gave thanks he said, to “all those who on Saturday gave their confidence to the candidates; to all the candidates who gave their service with great commitment and dedication; those who helped in this campaign, party officials, party workers, party media workers and thousands of volunteers who have given their hearts to the party.”
Dr Busuttil thanked Marlene Farrugia and all the candidates of the Democratic Party. He also gave his sincere thanks to those who had helped him over the last four years, including the staff of his office and volunteers.
“Lastly, but certainly not least, I thank my family, who over the past four years have given me the most incredible support,” said Simon Busuttil.
