For the second consecutive year, the Franciscan Sisters School in Xaghra Gozo, are the winners of this year’s 8th edition of the Battery Buster Campaign, better known as `Batterina,’ sponsored by WasteServe.

The students at St Francis School Xaghra, Gozo collected an average of 4.11kgs of spent batteries per capita.
The campaign was open to all kindergarten, primary, secondary and post-secondary schools. As in previous years, the competition took the form of an inter-school battery collection competition with a prize for the school which collected the most batteries per capita

The school was awarded a first prize of €3,500, which the school said is being used for improvements in the educational needs of those students who attend this school.
The school has purchased a rubber mat, to ensure that playtime for the children is safer and more comfortable, there is also a new system for purified water, as well as several tablets for the use of students attending the school.

Sr. Michela Calleja, speaking on behalf of St Francis School, said that teachers encourage their students from a young age to recycle their own waste, as well as teach them to try to re-use and reduce their own waste.
