In view of the fact that Government has a backlog of €25 to €30 million in payments to medical importers, and that this could bring the importation of essential medicines to a standstill. Arnold Cassola, Chairperson of Alternattiva Demokratika -The Green Party, is urging the government to postpone the collection of VAT from importers of medicinals, due for the 15th of December, and provisional income tax, due for the 19th of December, till after the government has paid a substantial amount of its dues to these importers.
“Another solution which AD is proposing is that the importers fill in their VAT and Provisional Tax returns as scheduled on the 15th and 19th of December, but do not hand in any payments. All payments due will then be offset by Government from sums due by the State to the importers,” concluded Prof. Cassola.
