Over €16,000 in undeclared cash seized by Customs at MIA

An undeclared cash seizure has been made by Customs officials at the at the airport, in what they describe as a “record breaking year for the Department.”

Customs officials screening passengers arriving from Istanbul at MIA, stopped a Singapore national after passing through the Green Channel. The passenger’s luggage had flagged as suspicious when it passed through the x-ray machine.

The Department said that following a search on the passenger and his luggage, €16,500 as well as 2397 Singapore Dollars were seized.

The Police Economic Crime Unit was informed and the equivalent of €10,000 was returned to the passenger, with the rest being withheld pending investigations.

The passenger was taken by the Police and is expected to be arraigned in court this week.
