Earlier this month the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) in conjunction with WasteServ Malta Ltd, provided a visiting delegation from Northern Cyprus with technical assistance and experience on issues relating to waste management vis-à-vis EU legislation and obligations.

The delegation which visited Malta on a study mission to learn about the practices and legislative framework in the area of waste management was funded by the EU Technical Assistance Information Exchange Office (TAIEX).

MEPA officials briefed the delegation on various issues, including the Maltese situation in the waste management sector in the light of the EU regulatory framework, the environmental permitting system adopted by MEPA, the requirements of the EU Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), as well as on waste recycling and packaging waste schemes.

The various EU funding opportunities in the area of waste management were explained and a number of projects implemented by both entities were presented. The delegation was briefed about MEPA’s twinning light project in the area of hazardous waste, as well as WasteServ’s projects concerning aerial emissions control closed landfills at Maghtab, Qortin and Wied Fulija and the establishment of Civic Amenity and Bring-In sites.

Representatives from the private sector highlighted the importance for the effective and safe transportation and disposition of hazardous waste and shared their experience in the sector.

The delegation visited a number of waste management sites, including the Maghtab Waste Management Complex, the Marsa Thermal Treatment Facility, the Hal Far Civic Amenity Site, Sant’Antnin Waste Treatment Plant and the Malta North Sewage Treatment Plant.

Mr. Durali Elal who headed the delegation said “I am extremely satisfied with the visit and specially thank MEPA and WasteServ for their hospitality and for a useful learning experience. The knowledge acquired in Malta will help the Northern Cypriot Community to adopt waste management standards compatible with the EU legislation.”

The visiting delegation consisted of technical experts, engineers and other officials from municipalities and other public organisations.
