Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party has expressed its concern on possible price increases in the price of bread.

Michael Briguglio, spokesperson for Social and Economic Development said, “Now that the price of bread has been liberalised in Malta, AD hopes that all possible measures are taken to ensure that the price of this foodstuff does not increase without justification. In particular, AD is proposing that there should be a strong regulator totally independent of government to ensure that the monopoly in grain imports is not abused. The regulator should also ensure that there is no collusion between bakers and retailers of bread (especially supermarkets).”

Briguglio appealed to the Government to help increase bakers efficiency, for example through better fuel efficiency and other methods. This is permissible by EU rules.

Arnold Cassola, AD Chairperson added, “In these times of social and economic hardship, all possible measures should be taken to ensure that social inequality is not increased. The social dimension is a key issue for AD.”
