Oratorio-Concert: Santa Marija, il-Mara l’Hi Sbuhija at the Cathedral

The launch of the Oratorio-Concert on the theme – Santa Marija, il-Mara l’Hi Sbuhija, took place today by the Minister for Gozo D Justyne Caruana.

This concert, which is taking place at the Cathedral, is being organised by the Fondazzjoni Santa Cecilja of Gozo, in collaboration with the Gozo Cathedral Parish. Music is by Mro. Antoine Mercieca.

The lyrics by Joseph W. Psaila, get their inspiration from Christian tradition and theology and then proceed to focus on local history, highlighting the original cult of Astarte within the Cittadella.

The concert will also focus on the memorable event in WW2 of the arrival of the Santa Maria Convoy, as well as the customs and festivities that every year pull large crowds to Victoria on the 15th of August.

During the launch the Minister praised the commitment and professionalism of this voluntary organisation which continuously fosters cultural heritage in Gozo, especially through music.

Dr Caruana congratulated Maestro Antoine Mercieca and the lyricist Joseph W. Psaila. She explained that this initiative had successfully qualified to receive funds from the Ministry for Gozo NGO Assistance Scheme.

The music is for soloists and orchestra, which will be under the baton of Mro Antoine Mercieca. Soloists taking part during the concert will be, sopranos Rosabelle Bianchi, Ruth Portelli and Maria Grech Magro, mezzo soprano May Caruana, tenor Charles Vincenti and baritone Louis Andrew Cassar.

The Oratorio-Concert, takes place this Saturday, the 4th of August at the Cathedral, starting at 8:30pm, and will be under the patronage of the Minister for Gozo, Dr Justyne Caruana.

Attendance is free of charge and the public is cordially invited to attend.
