ADAlternattiva Demokrattika has said that it welcomes the commencement of the debate on the rent reform bill in parliament. Carmel Cacopardo, AD spokesman on Sustainable Development and Local Government said “The removal of the archaic rent laws and the introduction of a fairer sytem which respects the right of property owners and ensures social justice for deserving cases, has been a cause espoused by AD for over ten years now.”

Carmel Cacopardo urged the PN and PL to reach a consensus on the bill. He also insisted that the leases of political party clubs should be liberalised with immediate effect and the PN and PL should not indulge in the blame game as to which party had introduced or benefitted from requisition orders.

In this respect, Arnold Cassola, Alternattiva Demokratika Chairperson, referred to the case of the Labour Party Santa Venera Club which, though requisitioned by a Nationalist Government in 1967, was left unutilised for 6 years until the Labour government in 1973 allocated it to itself. This is a clear case of an injustice perpetuated under two different administrations and one which should be brought to an end at once.
