A new EU border and Coast Guard law drafted and piloted by MEP Roberta Metsola, has this morning been provisionally agreed by European Union Member States and the European Parliament.

10,000 additional new border and coast guards and operational staff will be deployed at Europe’s borders through the “Metsola law” in an effort to address migration and cross border crime challenges.

It will see returns of those who are deemed not eligible for protection in Europe made more efficient and increase cooperation with third countries, with full guarantees for fundamental rights.

The new law also allows for all the necessary tools to be used at external borders to fight cross-border crime.

Metsola said, “I am delighted that we have reached a provisional agreement on a new law that will address one of the major concern of citizens across the Union.

“The European Border and Coast Guard law will overhaul Europe’s border management. It will mean an additional 10,000 border and coast guards for Europe; more efficient returns; more tools to fight crime and will serve to allay security and crime concerns and aid in our migration strategy.”

The MEP concluded, “Europe’s citizens were looking to us to deliver and we have, in record time. This is a huge win for Europe and a huge win for Malta and Gozo.”

A final vote on the law will take place in April.

You mean it would further encourage people smugglers to send out their boats safe in the knowledge that there is an armada in the Med waiting to bring in the ‘refugees.’ Another sandwich short of a picnic idea that’ll cost EU citizens dearly.
