Forum Unions Maltin has raised its objections to the European Commission’s Country Specific Recommendation for Malta published this month, which is requesting an increase in statutory pensions age. Saying “Do not touch the statutory pensions age.”

For.U.M in a statement said that on of the recommendations specifies that Malta needs to ensure the fiscal sustainability of the pensions system by “adjusting the statutory retirement age in view of expected gains in life expectancy.”

It added that it has noted the various measures which were carried out through the pensions reform process to ensure sustainability, “some of which were clearly detrimental to employees who saw their respective statutory retirement age being raised in the past years,” For.U.M said.

For.U.M argued that whilst emphasising that the sustainability of pensions is of utmost importance, measures which are detrimental to employees cannot be considered.

For.U.M. appealed to the Government to consults all social partners about the work being carried out by the Pensions Strategy Group who should finalise their work by 2020.

“To this effect For.U.M. will be making an official request to the MCESD for the inclusion of the said item in its agenda,” it said.
