A sustainable transport service has been launched by Ghajnsielem Local Council, which will be offered to elderly residents and those with reduced mobility – The Ghajnsielem Community Van.
The Council came second in a competition organised by Transport Malta in 2016 as part of European Mobility Week for permanent measures. A € 30,000 grant was awarded by the Authority, for an electric vehicle.
The Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg and Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government and Communities Silvio Parnis, together with the Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana, met Local Councils in Ghajnsielem, for the announcement.
Walk With Us – Safe Walking, Safe Cycling – is this year’s theme for European Mobility Week 2019 which was also launched on Friday.
Minister Borg explained that there will be once again be two competitions for European Mobility Week, one for small activities and another for permanent measures.
He urged all Local Councils to come forward with their proposals for more sustainable communities in their transportation options.
The Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana said that this initiative complements the vision of EcoGozo in introducing new and alternative modes of transport in full respect of the environment.
Dr Caruana congratulated Ghajnsielem Local Council and Transport Malta for this initiative and expressed the hope for further collaboration between Local Councils and the Government.
Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government and Communities Silvio Parnis also congratulated Local Ghajnsielem Council on the funds obtained by virtue of the European Mobility Week, which means that they can begin offering a free transportation service for the elderly and disabled.
As part of the competition of small activities, this year five proposals will be selected from local councils and / or NGOs to organise activities for sustainable transport during European Mobility Week, which will be held between the 16th and 22nd of September. They will be given between € 1,500 and € 2,500 as part of this competition.
The competition for permanent measures will see two local councils awarded grants of € 50,000 and € 30,000 respectively.
