The Gozo Aquatic Centre project is entering the next phase now that the excavation works are completed – with a tender being issued for the building work to start.

The announcement was made on Saturday by Minister for Gozo Dr Justyne Caruana, who explained that the complex, which will host the swimming pool and other facilities, will cover 5,800 square metres and will be built adjacent to the Gozo Sports Complex in Victoria.

She said that it will house state-of-the-art facilities through an investment of around €10 million, and will include among others – a swimming pool that can be used for both water polo competitions and other aquatic disciplines, a multi- purpose community pool, a gym covering 500 square metres, multi-purpose spaces, as well as ancillary facilities including a first aid room.

“This is the dream of many, which is being conducted by the government after many years of waiting and the project is progressing according to the scheduled time frame,” said Dr Caruana.She said that the project arose following extensive consultation with experts and entities involved in the main swimming related disciplines including; Aquatic Sports Association of Malta, the Special Olympics, the Gozo Sports Board and Otters, among others.

Dr Caruana added that through these discussions a holistic project is being created that can be used by a wide range of organisations and individuals, both for sporting purposes as well as those related to health and therapy.

The Minister concluded by saying that this major project for Gozo is split into several phases, with the first – the excavation process finished, which was supervised by the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, now the second part – the construction of the complex can get underway.
