Work has now started on Mgarr Road, Nadur, said Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana. In a facebook post, Dr Caruana said that “this is the largest investment ever seen in Nadur.”
She said that this will be part of Project Gozo – roads in your locality – which is an ambitious project of the Ministry for Gozo relating to the island’s infrastructure, for the present and future.
The long-awaited work on Mgarr Road has been subject to several delays and was due to start September 2018.
Dr Caruana had said that the road presented “major challenges, as it is not only cosmetic, but a massive infrastructure project due to the fact that it has been neglected and in a bad state of repair for several years.”
In April this year, Minister Caruana announced that both Maltese and foreign experts had been consulted on the project. “This is being done to establish exactly what interventions are needed and what it means on this project to find a lasting solution and not just short-term one.”
Several tests were out through local and foreign laboratories, which by nature takes time, but are necessary to establish the road design, said Architect Adrian Mifsud
He explained that the road is built on a clay slope and using old methods, it was inevitable that this would be unstable. Mifsud added that since 3 watercourses run under the road, they had also continued to degrade the road base.

After whole months of criticism of when works on this road are to start, now there has been an answer to all. It has to take proper and professional expert advice of how this major road build on clay has to be reconstructed.
Local & foreign architects & experts were consulted on how these works can proceed. When agreement was reached, works have started and will continue part by part, until it’s finished in satisfactory levels.
Just as the road leading to ta’ Hali has been done most professionally in record time.
Lino this is a simple road imagine the tunnel and your breakwater expansion will take a life time. Its amazing to see a JCB removing the asphalt when there are far more better machines to do the job. Only in Gozo.

Mr Slide, it is not a simple road project but a major one as all the road has to be reconstructed from the bottom pavements up. This has to be done in stages. If you know anything different please do inform the public.
