The Interdiocesan Commission for the Environment – KA, has said in a statement that yesterday’s announcement that the Planning Authority had approved the application to change a “derelict building” into a modern villa on ODZ land in Qala, “shows great insensitivity.”

The KA reiterated that these types of decisions “show great insensitivity on the part of the authorities to the natural heritage of our islands, as well as to the peace of mind of all Maltese and Gozitans.”

The Authority added that “the fact that the decision seems to have been taken on a mistaken premise makes it bewildering. The way these decisions are taken shows that priority is given to those eager to fatten their pockets, rather than to the communities, so that the natural heritage in our country, is being eroded instead of being protected.”

The KA concluded by urging the Environment and Resources Authority to rigorously appeal the decision on the Qala development, a decision, which it said, hurts everyone who has at heart the protection of the Maltese countryside.
