The Qala Local Council has said that it is taking legal advice regarding the recent announcement about the Qala development permit at Ta’ Muxi.
The Council was referring to a statement issued by a spokesperson for J Portelli Projects, saying that the company would “voluntarily renounce this permit with immediate effect.”
The company spokesperson went on to say the application had been “singled out by the Planning Authority and media.”
The Spokesperson also said that, “the Authority must ensure that its policies are clear in their application are applied in an indiscriminate manner.”
The Qala Council said that, “although the developer has said that he is renouncing the permit, we want to ensure that the permit has actually been revoked and will not be utilised in the future.”
Earlier today the Council voiced its “shock and vociferous objection to the PA’s decision where a dilapidated ruin – practically a mound of stones – was given permission to become a villa with a swimming pool.”
The Council stated that “the site in question is one of high landscape value and of great ecological and rural value. All applicable laws and policies militate against such a permit being issued.”
It argued that “ENGOs objected to this insensitive and extensive project. Every expert consultative body objected to this project.”
“Yet the votes of 7 Board members were enough to neutralise all objections and expert opinion,” it said.
The Qala Local Council concluded by saying that it “will not allow any form of intimidation to stop it doing what is right and necessary in the protection of our country and is declaring that it will be a party to the appeal which will be filed.”

Kudos ta our mayor Paul Buttigieg who is a champion to safeguard our environment
It appears Mr Portelli has done the honourable thing. All credit to him.
Nigel you are very naïve not to say foolish or plain stupid! Mr. Portelli has NOT done any honourable thing and certainly NO credit is due! He renounced the permit because he knows that it was unlawful to be granted so much so that the P.A. Chairman Johann Buttigieg has had to resign because the planning authority is run by the Castille Mafia and when these Mafiosi saw that the matter is being investigated by many different entities including Alfred Sant they got Portelli to renounce the permit to hide the corruption and God knows what they promised him for that! This Government is run by the Mafia Trio at Castille and based on corruption whilst they continue to rape our country and its coffers!
Well John, you are obviously privy to much more inside information than I am. I just got the impression that Mr Portelli doesn’t need the aggro on this one!

I am horrified to hear that the beautiful semi-natural habitats at Qala are under assault from a totally inappropriate planning decision. If the permit is used the area would inevitably be blighted and despoiled, ravaging one of the loveliest and most nature-rich places on Gozo. Congratulations and my heartfelt thanks to everyone who challenged this greed.
