The Kura Association within the Gozo diocese has inaugurated the completed restoration and conservation work of a painting in the parish church of Kercem.
The restoration took 11 months to complete and was carried out by the company ReCoop-The Restoration and Conservation Coop of Birkirkara – at a cost of 200,000 part-financed through European funds.
This forms part of a series of restoration and conservation projects being carried out in various Gozitan parishes and communities, which are being led by San Lawrenz Mayor Noel Formosa, with a total value of € 2 million from the European Regional Development Fund.
This latest project is in the parish church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and St. Gregory, Kercem, with the completion of the restoration of the painting which covers the ceiling of the Sanctuary.
The inauguration was carried out on Sunday morningby Mgr. Mario Grech, Apostolic Administrator for Gozo.
This piece of art is the work of Maltese artist Professor Giuseppe Briffa (1901-1988) who between 1937 and 1943 painted the whole ceiling of the church, depicting the most important episodes in the life of St. Gregory – the parish patron. In 1885 the church was additionally co-dedicated to Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
Six other completed projects were inaugurated in November in Ghasri, Qala, Sannat, Marsalforn and Xaghra.
