Rachel Portelli is an author from Victoria in Gozo, who has just had a new novel published – Special 1- about a young girl with diabetes.

Published by Olympia Publishers, the novel tells the story of three-year-old Amelia Rose, who, when diagnosed with a chronic illness, finds that her world changes forever, as does that of her family.

From being an ordinary little girl, Amelia becomes someone with a ‘condition’ which will drastically impact her life and all those close to her.

Despite the special treatment and complications, Amelia manages to live a somewhat normal life. Like any other person, she experiences happiness and sadness, love and anger, but at the end of the day, will she crumble or rise?

Author Rachel Portelli was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of three and a half years old. Although there where many bumps and hurdles, writing became her form of therapy.

Rachel graduated from university, became more active within the diabetes community building her online platform ‘Supporting 1 Another’ and continued to involve herself both locally and internationally.

Rachel stressed that raising awareness and supporting other people living with chronic illnesses is important to her and she wants to continue making a difference in their future.
