Roberta Metsola, Member of the European Parliament for Malta and Gozo, has been named as the chair of the new European Parliament Intergroup. MEP Metsola will chair the group together with Green MEP Daniel Freund.
Speaking today, Roberta Metsola, “The political and constitutional crisis in Malta must be a catalyst for change also on a European level. We need to have mechanisms in place to ensure that we have the tools to prevent criminality and corruption at the highest levels of EU Member States.”
She stressed that, “in crisis situations like Malta, people look to the European Union for legal and moral leadership. We cannot have more platitudes, we need concrete action and for that to happen the EU needs to develop instruments to protect people from corruption and criminality.”
“Corruption kills. Daphne Caruana Galizia was assassinated because she exposed corruption at the highest levels of Government,” stated MEP Metsola.
“It is an honour to be able to co-chair this new intergroup with my colleague Daniel Freund. We come from different political camps but we are on the same page when it comes to fighting corruption.
MEP Metsola concluded by saying that, “on a personal level, coming from Malta, I am determined to use this platform to show that the disgraced Keith Schembri, Joseph Muscat and Konrad Mizzi do not define the Maltese population.”
MEP Daniel Freund who will co-chair the new intergroup said, “the case of Daphne Caruana Galizia illustrates the toxic effects of corruption and nepotism in Europe and makes the work of the anti-corruption intergroup all the more relevant. I am proud to chair the group with Roberta. Let’s get to work.”
