Over 400 athletes of all ages compete in Sunday’s Nadur 8K event

The Nadur 8K held today – Sunday – closed the calendar year for running races in Gozo and Malta. This was the fifth edition of this end of year race on the island of Gozo, with the route known for its breathtaking views.

Renowned Maltese runner and Nadur Resident, Charlton Debono won the race for the 5th consecutive time, cutting last years performance by 20 seconds, setting the new record of 25:29.

The event is organised by the Nadur Local Council, together with Garmin Malta, the Ministry for Gozo and the Gozo Sports Board. Other collaborators include TriGozo, Athletix Gozo, and Shamrock Stars – as athletics schools in Gozo.

This is the biggest sporting event hosted by a Local Council and this year involved about 400 athletes of all ages, braving the cold wind to take part in their events. As an event, it started with an 8 kilometres run, continued with a 5 kilometres walk, followed by 3 kilometres, 2 kilometres and 750 metre runs for children between 8 and 15 years of age.

The organisers presented a commemorative medal to each and every participant together with a goodie bag. This year’s medal represents the Nadur Basilica.

The Nadur Council said that the event has grown to such an extent, that it now has to be organised hand in hand with the Police, Transport Malta, a number of security officers and an ambulance. The organising team includes no less than 60 volunteers, including 35 to marshals to cover all roads. “Truly a feast of sports during such a warm and beautiful Christmas time and year-end 2019,” the Council said.
