Tests carried out on a a number of slime toys on the local market have shown that the ‘DIY Slime’ toy pose a “serious risk” to users.

The tests have been undertaken by the Market Surveillance Directorate within the Technical Regulations Division of the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA).

The MCCAA said that the ‘DIY Slime’ is not compliant with the applicable standard (EN 71-3:2013+A3:2018) since it contains very high levels of the harmful substance named ‘boron.’

It explained that “the quantity of boron present in the toy exceeds the allowable limit and categorises the product as serious risk. Ingestion or contact with an excessive quantity of boron may harm the health of children by damaging their reproductive system.”

The testing has been carried out as part of a joint action of the CASP 2019 Project, financed by the European Commission.

The MCCAA said that it is in contact with the local importer to recall the product and withdraw it from local retailers.

Consumers who had bought this product should not use it and return it to the retailer from where they bought it. “Retailers are obliged to redress consumers returning these products according to law,” the MCCAA said.
