Nadur Carnival festivities open this Sunday with the Organised Carnival to kick-start the very popular annual events in the village, when around five hours of fun will get underway from 12.00pm, with a packed programme of activities taking place in St. Peter & St. Paul Square.
This wonderful afternoon of fun promises to entertain all ages, including a riot of colour, laughter, a variety of carnival dances, hilarious sketches, costumes, maskeruni, floats – both large and small, and the traditional kukkanja to bring it to a close.
During Thursday’s official launch for the Nadur Carnival, Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri announced that for the first time, the Spontaneous Carnival will be broadcast live on PBS from 10pm to midnight on Saturday, the 22nd of February.
The Spontaneous Carnival – which projects the message of Carnival made through satire, starts on Friday, the 21st through to Tuesday, the 25th of February, in December 13th Street, St. Peter & St. Paul Square and the surrounding streets, beginning after sunset each day and lasting till the early morning hours……
Nadur village has become synonymous with Carnival and every year it attracts thousands of local, Maltese and tourists to this spectacular event, with something for all ages to enjoy.
The Local Council said that “people to be free to express their views, provided there is no infringement. Enforcement is also on hand to see that there is no abuse or animal cruelty during the events.”
Clint Camilleri explained that the Nadur Carnival is mass activity which attracts about 900 participants and 5,000 visitors to the Organised Carnival, and more than 30,000 people over five nights for the famous Spontaneous Carnival.
Minister Camilleri concluded by thanking the Cultural Heritage Directorate within the Ministry for Gozo for its continuous assistance towards making these activities such a success.
Nadur Mayor Edward Said, said that the Nadur Organised Carnival is arranged so as not to coincide with other Carnival activities in Gozo and Malta, which then gives the opportunity for all participants to take part.
He added that the Spontaneous Carnival which begins after sunset, again is arranged with the Region to coordinate with other Carnivals organised in the villages.
Mayor Said went on to explain that the Local Council, without taking away from the spontaneity of the Carnival, must at the same time ensure everything goes without incident. The work involved includes coordinating with Police, as well as the security, cleanliness, lighting, and sound for the events.
He thanked Minister Camilleri for the financial assistance provided by the Ministry for Gozo to help make the Nadur Carnival events possible.
