PN Spokesperson for Gozo Chris Said, has said that following the response by Minister for Home Affairs Byron Camilleri to his Parliamentary Question on crime statistics in Gozo, it clearly shows that crime in Gozo greatly increased during 2019, particularly reports of theft.
Minister Camilleri on Monday said that last year, there were 276 reports of theft, this was against 233 that were reported in 2018.
The Minister also said that 66 fights were reported, up from 57 in 2018. 57 were arrested for possession of drugs, against 39 the previous year.
The data show that there were no underage people caught in entertainment establishments for either year. There were 10 people who were caught smoking in public places, up by 3 on 2018.
Dr Said argued that faced with this situation the Government is not taking any concrete steps.
He also stated that the Gozo Police has more than 30 fewer officers than is required to have a full complement.
