A Seminar on Reading and Writing Difficulties – has taken place in Gozo to mark the occasion of the European Day for Speech and Language Therapy.
Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri, opened the seminar, and said that the purpose of the day, which is marked on the 6th of March, is to raise awareness of the profession throughout Europe.
The Minister explained that there has always been one clear message – to prevent communication difficulties – which can be achieved by providing knowledge and experience across Europe.
He added that the Ministry always supports these types of initiatives and has provided financial support to enable this seminar to take place for the second consecutive year, organised by the Speech Language Unit.
Minister Camilleri said, “every year, Malta and Gozo, appointments are given to 35,000 persons who have some form of difficulty in communication. The Speech Language Unit, Gozo General Hospital, offers this service, not only from hospital outpatients, but also in all Gozo schools.”
He added that since July 2018 a speech language service has been provided at the Xewkija Auberge. This service complements that offered by the Speech Language Centre in Malta under the Ministry for Health.
Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri concluded by saying that this day is synonymous with one important word; Information, with the aim of increasing public awareness about the problems of language and communication, as well as on the work of Speech and Language Therapists and local organisations.
