Arthall in Gozo will be celebrating the opening night of its next exhibition, with the Artist’s Talk – Between Ash and Dust, by Vince Briffa.

The exhibition will be open at the Victoria gallery between the 1st and 26th of April, and the talk – on Friday, the 3rd of April, at 7.30pm – will focus on the states of the in-between in art practice.

Between Ash and Dust, speak of implausible distances and detached spaces splitting up such evasive elements as smoke and sky. They are as much about the process of drawing/painting as they are about the current war imagery of destruction taken from tabloids or television.

The gallery said that these metaphoric memorials sway unclearly between human intervention and natural phenomena and embody an act of restitution through the same material they are made of (charcoal being fire’s residue), a destructive force embalmed through its very remains.

Briffa, speaking about the pieces in his exhibition said, “my work centres on the co-existence of dualities. It treads blurred borders and investigates uncertain divides between opposing poles. It synthesises extremities, and acts as a seam that binds together disparate realities. Uncertain of its own actuality, it questions its own being.

“I am not a painter or sculptor, I am also not a filmmaker or a writer. I produce ‘work.’ It is my vocabulary. It is the vehicle that best embodies my thoughts and connects all my creative output.”

Vince Briffa was born in Malta in 1958. Lives and works in Malta. In 2000 he graduated in MA Fine Arts with distinction (Leeds University, UK) and in 2009 PhD, University of Preston UK. From 2011 to 2019 – he was Head of Department of Digital Arts, University of Malta. In 2015 he was Associate Professorship, University of Malta.
