During Friday morning’s update on Covid-19, Supt. of Public Health, Prof Charmaine Gauci, said that there are three new positive cases in Malta, the total is now twelve.
A 45-year old Maltese man, who flew to Malta from Munich on the 7th of March, developing symptoms on the 11th of March. She said he is in good condition.
The family members are also now in quarantine but not displaying symptoms, Prof. Gauci said. The man was self-employed but had not much contact with others.
A 40-year old Italian, living in Malta, went to Paris on the 29th of February and returned on the 6th of March. He started with symptoms on the 10th of March and after being swabbed he tested positive.
Prof. Gauci said that the man does work that is based online, so has no co-workers, he did however, meet with two other people, who have now been tested.
A 30-year old Maltese woman – a health care worker – travelled to Brussels on the 5th of March, returned on the 9th, and started showing symptoms on the 11th of March.
Prof Gauci went on to say that the woman had attended work on the 10th of March, she said that it was minimal risk, however precautions have been taken and a risk assessment was undertaken on Friday morning.
The woman had also been to some social events, and contact tracing is now being done, her family members are not showing any symptoms. Anyone that the woman has been in contact with has gone into quarantine as a precaution, Prof. Gauci said.
Prof. Gauci stressed that the woman was “not infected through the hospital, all cases have so far been imported from abroad.”
She spoke about the fact that authorities are expecting local transmission, however the aim is to ensure that as far as possible, the impact is minimised.
Prof. Gauci also advised that a woman, who earlier this week had tested as positive, is now in “recovery,” but not yet discharged.
On Friday morning, Doctors across Malta stressed that the only way to stop the virus spreading was to put Malta in an immediate lockdown, and called on the Government to do so.
