There are 10 new cases of Covid-19 registered as positive, Supt. of Public Health, Prof Charmaine Gauci, said on Wednesday, including the first cases of persons aged over 70.
The first is a 70-year old Maltese man, he started symptoms on the 9th of March, but has only just tested positive for the virus. He is in a stable condition, however the source of the infection is not yet known.
Prof Gauci advised that total confirmed cases now stand at 48, some patients are at Mater Dei, those less serious are at heath care facilities, or at home in isolation under the care of designated doctors. Testing for Covid-19 is being widened, she added.
Two young women, aged 26 and 27, had travelled to Germany and Poland, returning from Berlin on the 11th of March. Contract tracing is being carried out in, including for passengers on the return flight.
An Italian couple living in Malta, who had not been abroad, had tested positive. They had been in contact with someone who had been overseas.
A Maltese woman aged 48 tested positive and had been in London. Symptoms started on the 17th of March, she and her family are in quarantine.
Two further cases are related to a case advised yesterday – a woman at Mater Dei with a fracture who had tested positive. The two are a 57-year old man from a different ward, and a 73-year old man from the same ward.
Prof Gauci said that all patients in the ward had been tested and the result was negative. The ward was closed, with staff and patients now in quarantine.
A 37-year old Maltese man, is another case, he had been in contact with a foreigner at work who had returned from the UK. Authorities are carrying out contact tracing.
A 26-year old woman is another case and is related to someone who had previously contracted the virus.
Prof Gauci went on to explain that in some cases there is uncertainty regarding the source of infection for the virus. She added that this is to be expected and points towards “a few cases of local transmission.”
