As from tomorrow, a €100 fine will be applicable for any persons in a group of four or more in public, previously it had been illegal to be in a group of more than five people.

Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri said that the Legal Notice will now change the number to three.

He expressed his frustration that over the weekend, in particular on Sunday, the public were gathered out and about in public places, ignoring the advice from authorities to stay inside.

The Minister explained that this number does not apply to more than three in the group if they are all members of the same family residing together.

Camilleri went on to say that Police patrols will increase, including the Police Mounted Section around rural areas where picnics are popular, the Dog Section will be utilised for similar patrols.

The €100 fine may be increased if the public continues to ignore the new directives, the Minister warned.

The fine does not apply in cases of queues for buses or near bank branches, however, the Minister stressed that a two-metre safe distance between people has to be observed.

Wifi service in public will be limited, this he said, is aimed at reducing groups of people taking advantage of the free service.

These new directives will be on information leaflets translated languages so that everyone is made aware.
