In today’s update on the current Covid-19 situation, Supt of Public Health Prof Charmaine Gauci said that 3 new cases had been reported in the past 24-hours, from 731 tests. There have been 35,727 swabs taken in total.

She went on to say that there are 480 cases, 7 more people have recovered, making 372 in total, 77 cases are currently active, and there have been 4 deaths.

Prof Gauci explained that the latest cases involve people who had contacted the 111 helpline to report their symptoms.

1 of the cases involves a healthcare worker aged 26, who exhibited symptoms on the 3rd of May, he had worked the previous day, so contact tracing is currently underway for colleagues and as to whether any patients had been exposed to the virus.

The other 2 cases are a Maltese man aged 33 and a Maltese woman aged 50, both cases had been in contact with persons who had previously tested positive.

Gauci added that 14 patients are having to be treated in hospital, with 7 patients being treated at Boffa Hospital, 5 at St Thomas, in Mater Dei there is 1 in ITU, 1 in IDU and the remaining patients are recovering at home.

Prof Gauci appealed to the public to stay inside whenever possible, stressing that the relaxed measures which started today do not mean it is okay for everyone to go out.

She went on to reiterate once again that vulnerable people and over 65s should stay at home, saying that if people continue to keep going out there is the risk of losing all that has been achieved.

She also reminded that masks are now mandatory for anyone going into shops or travelling on public transport, bus drivers have the right to refuse passengers who are not wearing a mask to board the bus.
