In Sunday’s update on the current Covid-19 situation, Supt of Public Health Prof Charmaine Gauci said that, 6 new cases had been reported in the past 24-hours, from the 1,120 tests taken, in total 41,000 tests have been made.

She went on to say that there are 496 cases, 58 are currently active, a further 6 people have recovered, making 433 in total and there have been 5 deaths.

The new cases include a cluster of 3, with 2 Mater Dei healthcare workers, females aged 25 and 27, as well as a male patient who is Maltese and 53-years old. Prof Gauci said other patients in the ward and members of staff tested negative.

Another is an 89-year old Maltese man, a patient at Karen Grech Hospital and was in the same ward as the man that died earlier in the week. All patients and staff from the ward had tested negative, however the man started displaying symptoms and his test came back positive. His condition is stable. Other patients and 45 members of staff have tested negative.

There is a 51-year old Maltese male, he displayed symptoms on the 9th of May and Prof Gauci said that contact tracing is underway on relatives and employees.

A Maltese woman aged 48, started symptoms on the 8th of May, she was already in quarantine because her mother had previously tested positive.

Prof Gauci once again appealed to everyone to stick to the social distancing measures.

She explained that deciding on the relaxation of further measures needed 3 weeks to evaluate, and it would only be at the end of next week that the impact of the ones already made would be known, that is because of the 14-day incubation period for the virus.
